Top tips to be happy at work Part 1
We spend a lot of our waking time at work. It makes sense that we want to enjoy our time there as much as possible.
According to John Rampton, we can be happy at work. And it’s easier than we might think. He shared a few of his ‘proven tips to be happy at work’ in this Inc.com article. Let’s take a look at what he says, and then we can ask you about what makes you happy at work!
- Do meaningful work
It doesn’t matter how large the significance is, it’s important that what you’re doing means something to you. For example, you could be tackling issues of unemployment, or assisting a colleague who needs it. Just make it count.
“Employees who know how their work has a meaningful, positive impact on others are not just happier than those who don’t; they are vastly more productive, too.”
Take some time to seek out meaning in what you do.
- Create an office nest
A space that is your own in terms of how you lay it out or decorate it makes you feel more at home and comfortable. Companies differ in terms of their rules and set-up, some are fixed and others have clear desk policies, but most allow for at least personal touch or two.
- Find a best friend at work
Do you know of an organization that encourages referrals when hiring new employees? One of the benefits of this approach is that having a good friend at work can contribute to engagement levels. Harvard Business Review in their article “We all need friends at work” states that employees who:
“have friends at work perceive their job as more fun, enjoyable, worthwhile, and satisfying.”
Friends support each other at work, contributing to a sense of loyalty and comradery. That has to be good for business!
- Smile
This is such a simple tip and so easy to do. Smiling tells your brain to be happy, and your co-workers too. Smiling is contagious!
- Orientate for the future
Have longer-term goals and plans, and reflect on them often. This helps you to stay focused, motivated, to make better decisions and to be more satisfied with how you’re doing as you go along.
There were so many good tips that we’re going to produce a part 2 of this blog. What are yours so long? Please share them with us!
